Devotion:
Jesus’ words in this verse are part of His teaching in the Sermon on the Mount, where He calls His followers to focus their lives on the things of eternal value. As Lutherans, we understand this verse as a profound call to examine what we treasure most deeply, for our treasure reveals the condition of our hearts.

The treasure Jesus refers to is not limited to money or material possessions but encompasses anything we hold dear—our time, energy, relationships, and priorities. If our treasure is rooted in the fleeting things of this world, our hearts will become captive to worry, greed, and discontent. But when our treasure is in Christ and His Kingdom, our hearts are anchored in eternal hope, peace, and joy.

Martin Luther emphasized that the heart is the seat of faith. Where our faith and trust lie, there our hearts will follow. If we place our trust in earthly wealth or human achievement, we are left vulnerable to the uncertainties of this world. However, when we treasure the promises of God in Christ, we are secure, for His love and grace endure forever.

This verse invites us to align our lives with God’s Kingdom priorities. Treasuring Christ means seeking His will, serving others in love, and using the gifts He has entrusted to us for His glory. It also involves a daily surrender of our hearts, asking the Holy Spirit to purify our desires and redirect our affections toward what truly matters.

Reflection:

  • What does your use of time, money, and energy reveal about what you treasure?
  • How might you shift your focus to treasure Christ and His Kingdom more deeply?

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, help me to treasure You above all else. Purify my heart and align my desires with Your will. Teach me to store up treasures in heaven and to live each day for Your glory. May my life reflect the joy and hope of trusting in You. Amen.
