Devotion for Psalm 119:12 (ESV)
Reflection: Psalm 119 is a profound celebration of God’s Word, and verse 12 focuses on the psalmist’s praise and dependence on God’s instruction. The psalmist acknowledges the Lord as the source of all wisdom and truth, expressing a deep desire to be taught His statutes.
In this verse, we see the attitude of a humble heart—a heart that recognizes its need for God’s guidance. The psalmist doesn’t simply admire God’s Word but longs for it to transform their life. This prayer is both a confession of God’s greatness and a request for His teaching, showing us that faith involves both worship and submission.
As Lutherans, we cherish the understanding that God’s Word is a means of grace. Through His Word, He reveals Himself to us, convicts us of our sins, and points us to Jesus Christ, the living Word. This verse reminds us that we are not just students of Scripture but disciples shaped by it.
Application:
- Praise God for His Word: Like the psalmist, take time to bless the Lord for the gift of His Word. Recognize its role in guiding, comforting, and sanctifying you.
- Seek to Be Taught: Humbly ask God to teach you His ways. Approach Scripture with a teachable spirit, ready to be corrected and led.
- Live Out His Statutes: Allow God’s Word to shape your decisions, actions, and attitudes. This is not merely about knowledge but about transformation through Christ.
Prayer: Blessed are You, O Lord, for Your Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Teach us Your statutes so that we may walk in Your ways and live lives that bring You glory. Help us to delight in Your truth and be transformed by it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
