1 Corinthians 10:31 (ESV)

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Reflection

This verse is often heard as a demand. Paul intends it as a freedom statement.

Paul does not say, “Make your life worthy of God.” He says, “Whatever you do.” The ordinary, the repetitive, the unseen parts of life are already brought into God’s care. The Gospel has widened the field so completely that even eating and drinking now belong to Him.

The key is not what we do, but who we belong to.

Because Christ has already lived, died, and risen for us, our lives are no longer attempts to prove ourselves to God. They are responses to grace already given. Christ has taken our sin, our failure, and our divided hearts upon Himself. In exchange, He has given us a new identity: forgiven, reconciled, and freed.

This means giving glory to God is not about spiritual performance. It is not about doing more religious things or avoiding ordinary pleasures. It is about living from the confidence that God is already pleased with us in Christ.

When we eat, we do not earn His favor.
When we work, we do not secure His love.
When we rest, we are not wasting His grace.

All of life becomes a place where gratitude replaces anxiety, and joy replaces fear. The glory of God is not diminished by our humanity; it is revealed when forgiven people live freely under His mercy.

Prayer

Gracious Father,
You have already glorified Yourself by sending Your Son to save us. Free us from the burden of trying to earn Your approval. Teach us to live each moment—work and rest, joy and struggle—in gratitude for what Christ has done. Let our lives reflect Your mercy, not out of fear, but out of faith and joy in Your grace.
Amen.
