Proverbs 4:23

“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”

Solomon does not tell his son to guard his reputation, his schedule, or his behavior. He goes to the source.

In Scripture the heart is not just feelings. It is the control room: what you love, what you trust, what you want most. Everything else flows downstream from there. Words, choices, reactions, the whole direction of a life.

Which means you cannot fix the stream while ignoring the spring.

We usually try. We manage our behavior and leave our loves untouched. We clean up what people can see while the heart quietly drinks from whatever is nearest: worry, resentment, the need to be right, the pull of comfort. Then we’re surprised when the same things keep flowing out.

That is the Law showing us we can’t make a clean stream from a muddy source.

But the Gospel does not just hand us a guard post and wish us luck. God promised in Ezekiel, I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. In Christ He has done it. The spring has been made new, and it is fed by His Spirit.

Guarding your heart is not self-defense. It is keeping close to the Source Himself.

Prayer:

Lord, You see what is flowing out of me, and You know where it comes from. Keep my heart close to You. Fill the spring with Your Spirit so that what flows from me brings life. Amen.
