“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!”

Devotion:

In this verse, we are invited to “taste and see” the goodness of the Lord. This isn’t just a call to observe from a distance; it’s a call to experience God’s goodness personally and intimately, like tasting food and recognizing its richness. For Lutherans, this language brings to mind the sacramental nature of our faith, particularly the Lord’s Supper, where we physically taste the bread and wine and spiritually partake in the body and blood of Christ. In this act, we are reminded of God’s profound goodness and mercy to us sinners.

The verse also speaks to the blessing that comes to those who “take refuge in him.” This is a reassurance that when we place our trust and hope in God, He becomes our shelter and our safe place. For Lutherans, the doctrine of sola fide (faith alone) highlights that our refuge is not in our own works or righteousness, but solely in God’s grace given to us through faith in Jesus Christ.

When we face trials and hardships, we are tempted to rely on our own strength or seek refuge in worldly solutions. But this Psalm reminds us that true refuge and security can only be found in the Lord. The goodness of God is not something fleeting or superficial; it is profound, steadfast, and enduring.

Reflection Questions:

  • Have I truly “tasted and seen” the Lord’s goodness in my life?
  • In times of trouble, where do I seek refuge—God or something else?
  • How can I more fully experience the blessings of trusting in God’s protection and care?

Prayer:

Gracious Father, help me to experience Your goodness in deeper ways. Remind me, especially in moments of doubt or hardship, that true refuge is found in You alone. Strengthen my faith to trust in Your promises and help me rest securely in Your loving care. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
