“But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress.”

Reflection
In Psalm 59, David is under attack from his enemies. Yet, despite the trials, he chooses to focus on God’s strength and steadfast love. This is a powerful expression of faith. Instead of succumbing to fear or despair, David turns to praise. He sings of God’s strength and love, which are unchanging. Even though the night may have been full of danger and distress, the morning brings a renewed sense of God’s presence and protection.

As Lutherans, we too find comfort in God’s steadfast love, which is made known to us in Christ Jesus. Just as David declared God as his fortress and refuge, we are reminded that God is our ultimate protector. Luther often referred to God as a “mighty fortress,” echoing the same assurance David speaks of here. In the face of trials, we don’t need to rely on our own strength but on God’s. His power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9), and His steadfast love is new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23).

Prayer
Gracious and loving Father, we thank You for being our fortress and refuge. In times of distress and hardship, remind us of Your strength and Your unchanging love. Help us to trust in Your promises, just as David did, and to start each day with a song of praise for Your steadfast love. Keep us secure in Your grace through Christ Jesus, our Lord. Amen.
