Psalm 68:19 (ESV)
“Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears us up; God is our salvation.”

Martin Luther once said that faith is a living, daring confidence in God’s grace, so sure and certain that we would stake our lives on it a thousand times. Psalm 68:19 reminds us of this grace-filled assurance: God carries us daily, and He is our salvation. In the Lutheran tradition, we hold to the beautiful truth that we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. This verse encapsulates that truth, highlighting that our God is not distant but actively present in our lives, sustaining us each day.

God’s “daily” bearing of our burdens speaks of His intimate involvement with us. He doesn’t ask us to come to Him only when we’re desperate or overwhelmed; rather, He walks with us through each day, offering His strength for our struggles. This isn’t a temporary or occasional help; it’s a daily, reliable support rooted in His love and compassion.

And what a gift this is—because, as Lutherans, we acknowledge our human frailty and our inability to save ourselves. We trust that God has already taken our greatest burden—our sin—upon Himself in Christ Jesus. Jesus bore our sins on the cross, and because of His sacrifice, we are saved eternally. In our daily lives, He continues to bear our cares, doubts, and sorrows, renewing us by His Spirit and drawing us closer to Himself.

Reflection
Where are you tempted to carry your own burdens instead of entrusting them to God? How does knowing that He bears your load daily encourage you to rely on His grace?

Prayer
“Gracious God, we praise You for being the one who carries us each day. Thank You for taking our sins upon Yourself in Christ, and for bearing our burdens every day. Help us to remember Your faithfulness and to entrust all that we are to Your loving care. Strengthen our faith in Your unchanging grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
