“Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus.”

The story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch reminds us of the incredible power of the Word of God and our calling to share it. Philip, guided by the Holy Spirit, meets a man seeking to understand the Scriptures. He doesn’t rely on his own wisdom or eloquence but starts with the Word and proclaims the Good News of Jesus Christ.

The Ethiopian eunuch was reading from Isaiah 53, a prophecy about the suffering servant—Jesus Christ, who bore our sins and secured our salvation through His death and resurrection. Philip used this Scripture to explain the Gospel, showing how all of God’s Word points to Christ.

As Lutherans, we hold fast to the belief that the Word of God is sufficient and effective. It is through the Word and the sacraments that God works faith in our hearts. Just as Philip relied on Scripture to proclaim Christ, we, too, are called to point others to Jesus by sharing God’s Word.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How can you grow in your understanding of Scripture so that you are ready to share the Good News with others?
  2. Like Philip, how can you be more attentive to the opportunities the Holy Spirit provides for sharing the Gospel?
  3. How does the Good News of Jesus bring hope and comfort to your life today?

Prayer:
Gracious God, thank You for Your Word, which points us to Jesus Christ, our Savior. Help us to grow in understanding and faith so that we, like Philip, can share the Good News with others. Open our hearts to the leading of Your Holy Spirit and give us boldness to proclaim Your love and salvation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

This devotion highlights the centrality of God’s Word and our mission to share the Gospel.
