Mark 4:9 ESV
“And he said, ‘He who has ears to hear, let him hear.'”
Reflection:
Jesus concludes the Parable of the Sower with this call, emphasizing the importance of truly listening to God’s Word. This “hearing” is not merely with our physical ears but with a receptive heart, allowing His Word to take root and bear fruit in our lives.
In Lutheran theology, we affirm that faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17), and it is the Holy Spirit who opens our ears and hearts to receive the Gospel. Yet, how often are we distracted, treating God’s Word as just another voice among many? Christ’s call challenges us to pause, listen, and let His truth transform us.
The “ears to hear” are a gift from God, given through grace. In worship, Bible study, and personal devotion, we pray for the Spirit to open our ears to the life-giving message of salvation through Christ. Like fertile soil, our hearts must be ready to receive the seed of His Word, trusting in His promise to bring forth fruit in its season.
Prayer:
Gracious Father, thank You for giving us ears to hear Your Word. Forgive us when we fail to listen or allow distractions to drown out Your voice. By Your Spirit, open our hearts to receive Your truth and bear fruit in our lives for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Challenge:
Take time today to listen attentively to God’s Word. Set aside distractions, read Scripture, and ask the Holy Spirit to help you apply His truth to your life.
