Scripture: John 10:10 (ESV) “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

Devotional:

In John 10:10, Jesus contrasts the intentions of the thief with His own purpose. The thief seeks to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus declares His mission with a promise of abundant life for those who follow Him.

As Lutherans, we recognize the profound truth that our salvation is not merely an escape from the thief’s destructive schemes but an invitation into a rich, meaningful, and abundant life through our Lord Jesus Christ. This abundant life isn’t just an existence free from harm; it is a life filled with the overflowing grace, love, and purpose that Christ provides.

The thief, often identified as the devil, seeks to rob us of joy, kill our hope, and destroy our relationship with God. Yet, Jesus, our Good Shepherd, comes to counteract these malevolent forces with the life-transforming power of His presence.

Our Lutheran theology underscores the centrality of grace – the unmerited favor of God. In Christ, we find not only forgiveness but also an invitation to an abundant life. This life is characterized by an intimate relationship with our Savior, the assurance of God’s love, and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to live victoriously in the face of life’s challenges.

To embrace the abundant life Christ offers means to live with purpose and gratitude. It involves recognizing that our identity is secure in Him, and our lives are infused with eternal significance. This life isn’t immune to difficulties, but it is marked by a deep and abiding peace that transcends circumstances.

As we reflect on John 10:10, let us rejoice in the promise of abundant life in Christ. Let us turn away from the thief’s deceitful offerings and fix our gaze on the Shepherd who leads us beside still waters and restores our souls (Psalm 23:1-3). May our lives reflect the richness of God’s grace, and may we share this abundant life with others, inviting them to experience the transformative power of Christ.

Prayer: Gracious Lord, we thank you for the promise of abundant life through Jesus Christ. Help us recognize and embrace the richness of your grace each day. Protect us from the thief’s destructive schemes, and empower us to live with purpose, joy, and gratitude. May our lives be a testimony to the abundant life found in you. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
